Spolight on New Technology -  WorleePur Si Silane Functional Polyurethane Resins

WorleePur Si Sliane Functional Polyurethane Resins represent a new exciting technology that was recently launched by Worlee.  The WorleePur Si Silane Functional Polyurethane Resins allow coating and sealant formulators to achieve polyurethane performance properties without the use of isocyanates.  Morever, in situations where slightly elevated temperature curing is possible, the WorleePur Si Silane Functional Polyurethane Resins can be formulated to produce shelf-stable 1K systems.  In those situations where elevated temperature curing is not possible, a 2K system can be formulated with at least a 24 hour potlife.


The WorleePur Si Silane Functional Resins are silane modified polyurethane and polyurea compounds.



The rigid urethane and urea groups provide excellent tensile strength, hardness, and abrasion resistance, while the solft flexible polyol segments provide flexibility.  Polyurethanes are known for their versatility as a result of the wide range of polyols that can be selected.  Similarly, the WorleePur Si range of products can produced from the same wide range of polyols.  Currently, grades exist that are based on polyether polyols, polyester polyols, polycarbonate polyols, and even (non-yellowing*) alkyd polyols.  The resins are terminated with an ethoxy silane group.  The ethoxy silane group releases ethanol upon hydrolysis to effect curing, which reacts slower than the more dangerous methoxy silane groups and therefore offers better storage stability.

The WorleePur Si range of products require an acid catalyst for room temperature cure.  Crosslinking depends on the type and amount of catalyst as well as the amount of water (humidity), hydrophobicity of the resin, and the diffusion rate of water in the film.  Worlee recommends WorleeAdd VP 2100/ 2110, which are diesters of phosphoric acid catalysts.  These catalysts allow for a good balance between drying and processing times.  

The WorleePur Si range provides excellent chemical resistance and physical properties.




* WorleePur Si Silane Functional Polyurethane Resins that are based on alkyd resins do not yellow becuase they are practically fully saturated and cure via hydrolysis of the silane group





It is important to note that WorleePur Si Silane Functional Polyurethane Resins are not currently TSCA listed.  Worlee is currently working through the PMN process with the US EPA and expects to obtain TSCA status in the near future. In the meantime, samples are available only for R&D purposes.
