Lubricants are substances that decrease friction, minimize wear (by separating moving surfaces), prevent corrosion, cool parts by aiding heat transfer, disperse combustion products, act as a sealant and reduce noise and vibration. Lubricants are composed of base oils and various specialized additives (antioxidants, antiwear additives, extreme pressure additives, corrosion inhibitors, viscosity index modifiers, tackifiers, etc.)
Greases are solid or semi-fluid lubricants made by the incorporation of a thickening agent in a liquid lubricant (examples contain soaps of lithium, calcium, sodium, aluminum, etc. or they may be non-soap greases).
