Hikotack is Kolon Industries' brand of aromatic hydrocarbon tackifier resins. The Hikotack products are pale yellow, and are used in the formulation of adhesives, inks, paints, and in rubber compounding applications. Additionally, Hikotack resins find applications in concrete curing and asphalt modification. Hydrocarbon Tackifier Resins are thermoplastic resins that promote adhesion and tack in hot melt and pressure sensitive adhesives.
These tackifying resins impact the final adhesive's color, stability, and odor. Formulators select the appropriate hydrocarbon tackifier resin for their application by considering the softening point, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and composition of the tackifier.
Hikotack hydrocarbon tackifier resins are typically soluble in butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, benzene, chloroform, methyl ethyl ketone, chlorobenzene, acetone, carbon disulfide, 1,4-dioxan, aniline, and are partially soluble in hexane. Hikotack resins are typically insoluble in isopropyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, furfuryl alcohol, and methanol.
Hikotack resin compatibility is dependent on the softening point of the resin, particularly with regards to rubbers/elastomers and resins/polymers. Typically, Hikotack resins are compatible with linseed oil, soybean oil, tall oil, tricresyl phosphate, butyl benzyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, gum rosin, tall oil rosin, ester gum, polyterpene, paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, carnauba wax and polyethylene wax.
Additionally, Hikotack resins with low softening points are compatible with styrene butadiene rubber, SBS block copolymer, SIS block copolymer, SEBS block copolymer, ethylene vinyl acetate, acrylic ester resin, epoxy resin, alkyd resin, PVC resin, polystyrene, and phenolic resin, with partial compatibility with natural rubber and butyl rubber. Hikotack resins with high softening points are also compatible with styrene butadiene rubber, ethyene vinyl acetate, acrylic ester resin, PVC, phenolic resins, and partially compatible with SIS block copolymer, SBS block copolymer, SEBS block copolymer, epoxy resin, alkyd resin.
